Acting

Acting is an art in the entertainment media such as theatre, television, film, or storytelling.  Actors express the ideas in stories and bring them to life.

Fact 1. In 700 BCE, the first Western play called dithyrambs was held in Athens.  It was composed of songs sung to honor the gods.

Fact 2.   During the initial theatrical ages, the stage was under the control of the Church.  During the 16th century, the Elizabethan I era, the theatre came under the patronage of the royalty, and it flourished.

Fact 3.  Lee Strasberg was a prominent founding member of the Group Theatre and the Actors Studio since 1951. Strasberg was also the founder of the  Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.

Fact 4.  The Tony Awards, which celebrates theatre, made their debut April 6th, 1947 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York. The award was named for Antoinette Perry, a renowned member of the American theatre.

Fact 5.  The expanding interactive media coupled with the development of cable and satellite television operations has been projected to expand the acting industry.

Fact 6. Aligned to the exponential growth of the Internet, the growth in Internet films and mobile content for electronic devices is projected to expand the avenues for acting.

Fact 7. The employment figures indicate a projection of 4 percent growth from 2010 to 2020.  This is slower than the average for all occupations.

Fact 8.  The Screen Actors Guild Awards is one of the acting industry’s most prominent honors for acting. It began awarding actors in the film and television industry since 1995.

Fact 9. The Screen Actors Guild Awards has 2 randomly selected panels of 2,100 members from across the United States. The Guild’s 100,000 members choose the final ballot.

Fact 10.The Academy of Motion Picture and Arts was founded in 1927 by 36 prominent motion picture personnel. The Academy, which currently has about 6,000 artists and professionals, is an honorary membership organization.
