Abraham Lincoln is one of the world’s iconic leaders, having the vision and determination towards the emancipation of a downtrodden race, the slaves of America. He created a legacy that is still remembered and revered today.

Fact 1.  Abraham Lincoln had the distinction of being the 16th American President.

Fact 2.   Abraham Lincoln was appropriately nicknamed Honest Abe due to his honesty in all issues.

Fact 3.   Lincoln’s other nickname was The Great Emancipator.

Fact 4.  Lincoln’s second inaugural address found on the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. states, ‘With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation’s wounds…’

Fact 5.  Lincoln managed to overcome the adversity he faced in the rural areas by learning while chopping wood and making fences. His ability to learn on his own enabled him to fight all odds to achieve his goals in life.

Fact 6.  Lincoln’s famous speech at Gettysburg included the famous quote, ‘This nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom–and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the Earth.”

Fact 7. Lincoln’s occupation also included that of being a captain in the Black Hawk War.

Fact 8.  Lincoln’s mother, Nancy Hanks, died when Lincoln was 10 years old. The actor, Tom Hanks, is related to Lincoln through Nancy Hanks.

Fact 9. In 1863, Thanksgiving was declared a national holiday on the last Thursday of November by Abraham Lincoln.

Fact 10.  On Good Friday, April 15, 1865, an actor named John Wilkes Booth assassinated Abraham Lincoln.  He was the first president to be assassinated.
