FACT 1: Abortion is a part of reproductive healthcare. The National Abortion Federation has tried to bring the facts related to abortion to healthcare professionals, women, and policymakers. They have prepared lot of information on the facts associated with abortion and abortion care.

FACT 2: A medical abortion can be done by taking medications which will end the pregnancy. The other method is a surgical abortion which involves clearing the uterus using specific instruments.

FACT 3: Mifepristone or Methotrexate is one of the drugs which can be used for a medical abortion. Medical abortions are mostly successful in 95 to 98 percent of women with rare complications.

FACT 4: The medical abortions take about one day to three or four weeks for completing the abortion process from the first day of taking the medication.

FACT 5: After taking the first drug, Misoprostol, some women will experience vaginal bleeding which is lighter or similar to a heavy period. The cramps and bleeding will be more than what is normally experienced during the menstrual period.

FACT 6: Apart from cramps and bleeding, the other side effects of Misoprostol are; vomiting, nausea, headache, chills, fever, diarrhea, and fatigue.

FACT 7: Illegal abortions are unsafe, and they are performed by untrained professionals using primitive instruments or conducted in unsanitary conditions. It is estimated that 68,000 women die from unsafe abortions every year in the world.

FACT 8: The abortion was made legal in the U.S. in the year 1973. Among the 88 percent of women in the U.S. who have undergone abortions within the first 13 weeks, 97 percent do not face any complications. About 2.5 percent of them will have minor complications that can be managed in the abortion facility. Less than 0.5 percent will have serious complications.

FACT 9: Medical abortions are done only in the first nine weeks of pregnancy. The surgical abortions carried out between 13 and 24 weeks are complicated.

FACT 10: It is estimated that half of the entire pregnancies in the United States every year are unintended. About 1.3 million unwanted pregnancies each year are aborted in the U.S.
