Fast food has become an inseparable part of urban lives. Owing to work pressure and erratic office hours, individuals can hardly cook at home which is why they resort to fast food for lunch and dinners. Fast food chains have realized the need of the day which is why they are also expanding their horizons in terms of product brandings and packaging. KFC or Kentucky Fried Chicken is the second largest food chain in the world after McDonalds. The restaurant chain is most famous for its fried chicken items although it has started serving up burgers and other food products.

Mostly loved for its tasty and tender chicken preparations, the chain has undergone changes over its years of existing in the fast food industry. Through this period there have been several myths about the food served.

Here are some facts (business and trivial) that build the brand KFC:

Started as Kentucky Fried Chicken in North Korbin in Kentucky by Col. Sanders in 1930, the first outlet of the restaurant was opened in Salt Lake City in Utah.

Harland Sanders was initially not a Colonel. However, in 1950 he was made a Kentucky Colonel by the erstwhile governor of Kentucky. Ever since then, he started using the term Colonel with his name and dressed like one.

In 1963, Kentucky Fried Chicken had more than 600 restaurants all over the United States.

In 1964, Sanders sold his venture to Brown and Massey for US $2 million and a permanent salary. He was also signed to be the quality specialist for the chain.

During the mid-1960s, the restaurant chain started outlets in countries such as United Kingdom, Jamaica and Mexico.

By the time Sanders died in 1982, KFC had more than 3000 outlets in 48 countries that generated revenue of $2 billion annually.
China had its first KFC outlet in 1987 in Beijing.

Kentucky Fried Chicken was renamed as KFC in the year 1991, to keep up with the trend of companies converting their names to initials.

In 1997, Kentucky Fried Chicken was acquired by PepsiCo’s restaurant division, Tricon Global Restaurants, later renamed as Yum! Brands. It joined the likes of Taco Bell and Pizza Hut.

Due to increased health consciousness, KFC revamped its menu to include soft drinks, salads, burgers and staple dishes. All this was done in an attempt to distance itself from the unhealthy connotations that the word ‘œfried’ upheld.

An urban legend states that to lower production costs, KFC uses chickenoids, a genetically mutilated form of chicken that has no feet, feather or beaks. Its bones have been shrunk to increase the quantity of flesh. Since Kentucky Fried Chicken does not use real chickens, the name had to be changed to KFC, ran the urban myth.

However, KFC officials have gone on to clarify that they use chickens reared by poultry farms. The chickens are healthy and they do not contain any steroid or chemicals.

Despite many nasty rumours, KFC has enjoyed unwavering popularity among the masses. With new additions to the menu every year and newer outlets, KFC has a special place among urban foodies.
