Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll hailed from the family of Mr. William Mebarak Chadid and Mrs. Nidia Carmen in 1977 in Barranquilla, Colombia. Shakira has Lebanese roots from her father and Colombian roots from her mother. She was the youngest child in a family of eight siblings. She was raised in Colombia, and while she was young, she had an interest in music and a talent that her parents considered quite uncommon in a child that young. This is because she started singing at the age of eight, mainly in Spanish. Shakira left for the United States when she was 17 years of age to acquire English knowledge as well as learn how to write her songs in English.

Shakira’s Musical Career

In 2001, she released her first English album called Laundry Service that was successful and sold more than 200,000 copies in the first week of release. Shakira later released her second album volume in June 2005, called Oral Fixation Vol. 1. The album also became a hit, and she sold about 157 copies. Her third album Pies Descalozos (bare feet) hit the top of the Latin chart that led to Shakira’s breakthrough where she sold more than four million copies worldwide. This was when she won her first Grammy Awards for best Latin pop album.

Shakira is a singer full of ambitions. This is evident when she created a music video called La Tortuna. It was the first Spanish song to be featured in MTV and VHI. Additionally, Shakira has major live albums such as MTV Unplugged 2000.

Shakira was and still is a huge Latin super star when she crossed into the US mainstream pop charts. Most of her biggest hit songs were recorded in English which topped the bill boards. They included:

  • Hips don’t lie featuring Wyclef Jean. This song became Shakira’s first pop hit in both US and the UK.
  • Beautiful Liar with Beyoncé – 2007. This song was top three; which was nominated for a Grammy award.

Shakira is a well-known Colombian artist of all the time. She is known for her sensual Arabic dance moves. She is considered as one of the most beautiful artists with an amazing voice and is one of the most successful female Latin singers. This is why she was chosen to perform in the World Cup South Africa 2010. She performed the World Cup Anthem Waka- Waka.

Shakira’s other occupations

  • In the year 1994, Shakira joined the Colombian primetime soap EL Oasis as an actor; where she played a rich girl destined for ill-fated romance, for a period of one year. She later quitted from the acting industry and re-joined her musical career, where she released a third album called pies descalozos (bare feet).
  • Outside her busy career in the singing industry, Shakira was inspired by NBCs popular competition show The Voice in 2012; where she was confirmed as judge coach.

What Shakira Has Done To Aid The Society

Shakira has a love of taking care of others despite being involved in her music career. She came up with an idea of the Pies Descalzos Foundation. The foundation was started for Colombian children to assist them get a quality education and help them have better homes. She visits the young ones quite often to support and encourage them. Additionally, she performs at several concerts in aid of support and fundraising for the Pies Descalzos Foundation. She was honored with the Radio Disney because of her contribution to the Pies Descalzos Foundation.

All in all, Shakira started singing as a Spanish singer and later grew into a national phenomenon as an international singer. She is considered as a hero because her music career has totally changed the world. She is a hardworking and selfless artist. Because of a huge successful win in her albums, Shakira became a superstar in the music world. She is popularly known for her strong vocals and incredible hip-shaking belly moves which she was shown by her Spanish grandmother.
