Winston Churchill is famous for his great oratory powers and speeches. He was the prime minister of Britain during the greater period of World War II.

Fact 1 Churchill’s Childhood

Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill was born on the 30th of November at Blenheim Palace in Oxford shire. His grandfather was the seventh Duke of Marlborough and his father was Lord Randolph Henry Spencer-Churchill, a Conservative politician. His mother was Jennie Jerome, who hailed from an affluent family. His younger brother was Jack and both were brought up by Mrs. Everest, their nanny and a nurse who looked after them because their parents were busy with their work away from home.

Fact 2 His Schooldays

Churchill and his brother were sent to boarding schools in Brighton and Ascot in their early years before they were admitted to Harrow School. Although he was not very good in studies, he was fond of poetry, history and reading and also good at fencing. He was a rebellious child and had an independent mind. When he was in Harrow School, he joined Harrow Rifle Corps and this was the beginning of his military career. Later he had to appear three times to pass the British Royal Military College. However, he graduated successfully. He was quite sentimental till this age and wrote letters to his mother and wished to meet her.

Fact 3 His Eventful Days

In 1895, Churchill joined the Fourth Hussars and served in the Indian North West Frontier as well as Sudan. He worked for newspapers like The Pioneer and Daily Telegraph writing military reports. The Story of the Malakand Field Force and The River War are the two books authored by him about his experiences. In 1899, he left the army and became a war correspondent for Morning Post. On returning to Britain after escaping from the Boers, he published the book London to Ladysmith in 1900. Churchill then joined the Conservative Party for Oldham and became a Member of Parliament. Since he was disappointed by his party’s working systems, he joined the Liberal Party in 1904. After his election as a Member of Parliament in 1908, he was the President of the Board of Trade in the Prime Minister’s Cabinet. He introduced various reforms related to prison and labor wages.

Fact 4 His Interests In Reforms

In 1911, Churchill took steps to modernize British Navy introducing oil-fired warships. He was the advocate of Military aircraft and set up the Royal Navy Air Service. Churchill was the Minister of War and Air and Colonial Secretary from 1919 to 1922. After his defeat in 1922, he again joined the Conservative Party.

Fact 4 His Later Days In Office

In 1939, Churchill took up office as the First Lord of the Admiralty and also a War Cabinet member. He became the Chairman of the Military Coordinating Committee in April 1940, and in May he was appointed by King George VI as the Prime Minister and also the Minister of Defense. He succeeded in creating an alliance with the United States and Russia against the Nazis. He assumed office as the Leader of the Opposition Party for six years and in 1946 March, he made his famous speech in the U.S. During 1951 and 1952 Churchill was the Minister of Defense and later became the Prime Minister. Queen Elizabeth knighted him in 1953. He worked to improve the plight of the mine workers and established proper standards for housing through the Housing Repairs and Rent Act passed in 1955.

Fact 5 His Last Days

Churchill was gradually becoming weak and he suffered twice from heart attacks. Although he could not attend office physically, he remained active from his home in Kent and Hyde Park. However, a severe heart attack ended his life in 1965 on the 24th of January at the age of 90 years.
