Change is the watchword of the day, and this is true with every aspect of life. Education is also undergoing unpredictable changes. Huge buildings, wide playgrounds, long lines of school buses, the drone of school bells, and the teachers with stern looks on their faces may turn out to be things of the past if the concept of homeschooling gathers popularity on a large scale.

Why homeschooling?

The idea of home schooling emerged when education turned child-centered from teacher-centered. Technological advancement and the knowledge explosion have undoubtedly paved the way in the reduction of the importance of teachers. Intellectual standards for the students are also increasing at the present time. This calls for individual-paced learning strategies. This can also be the reason for the promotion of the concept of homeschooling.

Present status of homeschooling.

Though many states are promoting the idea of homeschooling, setting up common standards seems to be a herculean task. Teaching strategies undertaken by non-professionals here, the parents, requires continuous mentoring. Steps like profiles, case studies, prescribed syllabi, strict timing, and common evaluation techniques are welcome steps as they are sure to standardize homeschooling. Though comparatively novel in concept, homeschooling has much to boast about.

1. Stress-free environment.

Most of the schools follow a very strict discipline, rather like military discipline, which makes students fear schools. They fail to realize the need for such discipline. Homeschools provide a stress-free environment, students enjoy the freedom, and their output happens to be excellent.

2. Student creativity is boosted.
Regular schools are told to be curbing creativity and critical thinking. Since the students are forced to work in a rigid framework, redundant and rote learning is encouraged. Twenty-first-century skills like creativity, critical thinking, analytical skills, and logical thinking are not nurtured there. Contrary to that, homeschools help the students identify their areas of interest and latent talents, and undoubtedly they are molded into independent thinkers.

3. Close contact with parents maintained.
Homeschools put students under the constant guidance of their parents. Family ties happen to get stronger here. Parents are given the chance to set themselves as models, and thus their moral standards, values, principles, and concepts can easily be observed by their wards. As a result, children inadvertently get molded in a similar fashion.

4. Time management is easy.

On one side, homeschooling saves the time required for commuting to schools. On the other side, no strict time boundaries are set. Students can enjoy the freedom of adjusting their study hours at their convenience. Thus, they can take time for family gatherings and go for picnics and other recreational activities. This provides them with better opportunities of socializing. Homeschooling never means being isolated.

5. Solves the problems arising from commercialization of education.
With parents as the major stakeholders, education is going through the greatest commercialization. It seems to be the most profit-yielding area. There exists tight competition among different educational institutions. Results are the best way to market themselves in the most profitable manner. In this rat race and cutthroat competition, the individuality of the students is completely ignored. Unnecessary interference from the management and teachers can turn the lives of average students to hellish ones. They are placed under constant performance pressure. Homeschools save both the parents and students from these kinds of headaches.

6. Best for students with disabilities.
Children with learning disabilities thrive better in homeschools. They find the regular school environment threatening and hostile. They are best guided in homeschools. The company of their parents makes them overcome their challenges much more comfortably and meaningfully.

7. Ensures self-paced learning.

In a regular school, students with varying talents and interests are housed together, and a common syllabus is adapted so as to cater to the needs of each and every student. It goes without saying that here individual students, their preferences, and their aptitudes are overlooked. This problem stands eradicated in homeschools. Parents very easily identify the interest areas of their wards, and, hence, selecting an amiable syllabus becomes easier. Thus, students are allowed to perform to their optimum levels.

8. Meritorious students are given best opportunities.
Regular performers get the best rewards from homeschooling. Ambitious students can move ahead without waiting for the other students to catch up with them. Homeschoolers happen to make greater achievements earlier. They are allowed to pursue their studies at a speed that they themselves can decide.
The above-mentioned merits of homeschooling ensures the predominance of homeschools over regular schools. With proper supervision and guidance, homeschools are to flourish in the coming decade. Any institution that supports all-around development of one’s personality can act as an agent of education. If so, why doubt the triumph of homeschools?
