Books About Kidnapping

Kidnapping is a terrifying crime, especially when the victims are children. Kidnappers usually demand ransom, but investigations have revealed that in a number of cases, the victims are sex slaves. There are many books on the subject, based on true accounts as well as fiction.

Non Fiction

1. A Stolen Life by Jaycee Dugard
The author was abducted when she was eleven. She was held captive for eighteen years. She was raped and even had children, but she survived.
2. Finding Me:
A Decade of Darkness, a Life Reclaimed: A Memoir of the Cleveland Kidnappings by Michelle Knight and Michelle Buford This is the story which shocked the world when the women escaped in 2013. They were kept imprisoned by a local school bus driver, who tortured and raped them.
3. I know My First Name is Steven by Mike Echols
The author has told the true story of Steven Staynor who was kidnapped when he was seven. He managed to escape when he was 14.
4. Secrets in the Cellar by John Glatt Elisabeth
Fritzl was imprisoned by her own father in a cellar. She bore seven children, but he managed to conceal his dreadful doings until one of the children was 19, and had to be hospitalised.
5. My Story by Elizabeth Smart and Chris Stewart
A 14 year old girl was kidnapped by religious fanatics in June 2002. She was rescued in March 2003.

Fiction

1. The Fan Club by Irving Wallace
Four men are all obsessed with a famous actress. The book narrates how they kidnap her and try to justify their crime.
2. Goodbye Sister Disco by James Patrick Hunt
The daughter of a rich businessman is kidnapped, and her boyfriend is killed. This is a politically motivated crime.
3. Stolen by Lucy Christopher
A young girl of 16 is at the airport, on her way to join her family for a holiday. A strange man pays for her drink, and manages to drug it. The story tells of her abduction to a land she does not know.
4. Dirty Laundry by Daniel Ehrenhaft
An actress is asked to essay the role of a student in a boarding school. The character is rebellious, tough type. To get under the character’s skin, she is sent to a boarding school catering to such types. Soon after she arrives at the school, a student goes missing. She decides to investigate the disappearance.
5. Cry No More by Linda Howard
The protagonist is a woman who specialises in tracking down missing children. She is strongly motivated because her own baby was kidnapped. She meets a bounty hunter and they are strongly attracted to each other.
6. Look Again by Lisa Scottoline
A reporter adopts a child who is just a year old, and in poor health. Two years later, she sees his picture on a poster reporting a missing child.
7. The Weight of Silence by Heather Gudenkauf
This story is set in a small town. A traumatised seven year old girl and her only friend suddenly disappear from their beds.
8. Living Dead Girl by Elizabeth Scott
The protagonist of this story has been abducted by a paedophile. Her life is unbearable and she wishes her captor would kill her. This book is disturbingly realistic.
9. Emmy and Oliver by Robin Benway
Emmy and Oliver were good friends. Oliver was kidnapped by his own father, and has returned after ten years. They have to rebuild their friendship, while Oliver comes to terms with what happened to him.
10. Still Missing by Chevy Stevens
The protagonist is a real estate agent who is abducted by a psychopath.
