Introduction: The term ‘introvert’ was introduced by psychologist Carl Jung to define a person whose motives and actions are inward looking and subjective.

Introverts tend to be preoccupied with their own thoughts and to keep a distance between them and others.

Several books have been written on introverts and have expounded on the advantages of being an introvert.

Here are a few:

  1. Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking: By Susan Cain:This book talks about the life of an introvert. The author debates that today’s society tends to misunderstand introverts and this often leads them to be isolated from the world. She even presents scientific research statistics that show that being an introvert is common and normal. She also advises change in one’s workplace, school and parenting. Worth a read.
  2. The Introvert Advantage: How quiet people can thrive in an extrovert world: By Marti Olsen Laney: This book answers questions like: Do you walk away if too much is happening? Does someone have to coax you to speak at meetings, discussions and so on?This is a guide to help introverts to be noticed and appreciated, and focuses on their strengths.
  3. Introvert Power: Why your inner life is your hidden strength: By Laurie A Helgoe: Psychologist and introvert Laurie Helgoe discloses that more than half of America’s population are introverts. She says that an introvert gets his or her strength from reflection and solitude and finds living in an extrovert environment difficult. It makes an introvert feel valued and special for who they are and not for other factors.
  4. Party of One: The Loner’s Manifesto: By Anneli Rufus: In a society where people should be considered as one and not differentiated on the basis of social skills, this book comes in very handy. An introvert is often perceived as being abnormal, psychotic, selfish and cold. But this book will change that approach. Being an introvert is not abnormal; it is a state of mind that is actually very interesting and in a sense wonderful. The author speaks in favour of introverts and introversion. A must read for extroverts as well.

The Introvert’s Way: Living a quiet life in a noisy world: By Sophia Dembling: A motivational book for introverts to take ownership of their inner strengths and to appreciate that their life is not wrong,just different from that of an extrovert.Introverts often feel lonely, unwanted and even alienated.This book helps them change their perspective about themselves. They live their own quiet lives in a busy and noisy world.

The Highly Sensitive Person: By Elaine N Aron: Written by psychotherapist and workshop leader Elaine Aron, book gives an insight to discovering one’s personal traits and making the most of it them in everyday situations. This book will help introverts through self assessments and ways to gain greater self esteem. It offers practical and easy ways to fit into society.
  7. Neworking of People Who hate Networking: A Field Guide for Introverts, the Overwhelmed and the Under-connected: By Devora Zack: Through this book, Devora Zack destroys the notion that success is only achievable if you’re an extrovert. A very interesting read.
  8. The Introverted Leader: Building on your Quiet Strength: By Jennifer B Kahnweiler: In a highly extroverted culture, an introvert can feel neglected and overlooked, and sometimes misunderstood. By giving examples of great leaders like Bill Gates and Warren Buffett and their success stories, the book shows that introverts can work on their strengths and achieve great success.
