There are several thousands of books that high school graduates can read as they prepare to join colleges of their choice. Books about college are equally important for college-going students as these books help the students understand the challenges associated with college life and how to address these challenges. College books are not just for fun; some of the books are meant to make new and old college students make sense of college life, especially for freshmen. For instance, the book How to Be a Person: The Stranger’s Guide to College, Sex, Intoxicants, Tacos, and Life Itself by Lindy West, Dan Savage, Christopher Frizzelle, Bethany Jean Clement, and the staff of the Stranger, is quite useful for college students to make college life useful. This book is appropriate for college freshman because it is full of funny, practical, opinionated, and gives smart advice to college students about questions they might be too embarrassed to ask.

The other recommended book about college life is Wonder Boys by Michael Chabon. The author shows that adventure is not a preserve of school kids but is also good for college. The purpose of this book is to encourage high school graduates to look forward to college. It also encourages college students to live joyful lives and enjoy their college days. The book Wonder Boy has been made into a movie to appeal to college students who prefer movies to novels.

The third ideal book for college students is The Rules of Attraction, by Bret Easton Ellis. The purpose of this book is to show college students some of the challenges they are likely to encounter during their college stay. The main themes in the book are sex and drugs and the interconnection of sex and drug, which are key fascination for college students. Like Wonder Boy by Michael Chabon, the book has a movie adaptation and shows how such obsessions can make students forget the reason they are in college, which is education. Instead, college life and peer influence in college can make students live wicked lives characterized by drug use and immoral sex. The Rules of Attraction is written as a comedy, which makes it appeal to young readers who prefer funny books.

The other college book worth reading is The Secret History, by Donna Tartt. Like The Rules of Attraction, this book’s narration is about the challenges of college life, especially peer pressure. In this book, a rather incestuous but a close up group of college friends at a privileged northeastern university commit murder then cover it up. The murder and cover up in this book exemplify the extent to which peer pressure in college can be detrimental, changing the lives of students for the worse. As is often the case with unoccupied college students, the novel shows that the group of students are unsettled and undecided on what to learn or do, making them contemplate various topics such as Greek philosophy, social structures, and trust, and beauty.
