Books About Bullying

Introduction: Bullying is defined as the use of force or threats to abuse or aggressively dominate others. Bullying ranges from simple to more complex forms, where the bully may have one or more counterparts who are willing to assist him or her in the act. Bullying at school or at one’s workplace is called abuse.

A large number of authors have portrayed the types of bullying in their works, some of which are:

1. The Lord Of the Flies by William Golding: Published in 1954, this was Golding’s first novel, for which he won a Noble Prize. The story revolves around two young British boys who are stranded on an island with other children. One of the boys is overweight and is nicknamed ‘Piggy’. He is made into an outcast and becomes an unwilling source of entertainment for the others.

2. Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult: A partial legal thriller and a partial family drama, this book deals with bullying at school. The novel, written in 2007, tackles the issue of a high school shooting, where a boy trains his gun on his classmates as a result of being mocked all his life.

3. Blubber by Judy Blume : Written in 1974, this novel is set in a class of fifth graders. The story is told from the point of view of one of the bullies. Jill follows Wendy, a popular girl in the school, in mocking Linda, an overweight girl nicknamed Blubber. She finds things harder when the hierarchy of the school changes and the tables are turned on her.

4. A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness: : This novel is based on an original idea of Soibhan Dowd, who died of Cancer in 2007. The story revolves around a 13-year-old a victim of bullying who is finding it hard to deal with his mother’s chemotherapy. Every night at seven he meets a monster who tells him stories and, in return, he narrates his nightmares.

5. The Ugly Duckling by Hans Christian Anderson: People are often bullied because they are different, or even look different. The Ugly Duckling is a story about a cygnet(baby swan) who was hatched by a duck. And, being different, he was mocked, ostracized and bullied.

6. Drowning AnnaSue Mayfield: A gripping novel that focuses on teen popularity and teen bullying. Anna Goldmith, a new, shy and brainy girl at a Yorkshire school, strikes up a friendship with the popular Hayley Parkin, but it turns ugly. Anna commits suicide as a result of the trauma she was put through.

7. My Secret Bully by Truly Ludwig: Bullying may not be always face to face it;it can quiet and insidious. This book is about the quiet bullying of a girl by her childhood friend.

8. Bullying by Emma Caprez: This book is a compilation of real life stories about bullying that people have faced. The victims have shared their experiences of how they have dealt with bullying.

9. Cyber Bullying by Nick Hunter: This book tackles issues that are especially relevant today. A lot of teenagers are often fooled into relationships with men older than they seem. They are often abused and sometimes even murdered by their bullies,who fear that the victims may skit on them to the police.

10. Bullied by Carrie Goldman: Most of us are aware of how it feels to be bullied, mocked at and made to feel unwanted and unaccepted. But not many of us are aware of how to deal with such situations. This book is a complete guide to dealing with these issues and how to be prepared for these situations. The author offers concrete solutions to parents, teachers and children.
