Assassins have captured the imaginations of people for years and with good reason—they often operate in secret worlds, with dangers most of us know little of and their actions can affect the world for years to come. With the wide scope of the thrilling intrigue of the world that assassins live in, it is no surprise that they have been central characters in many books—realistic fiction, non-fiction, fantasy—set in a myriad of contexts.

  1. James Bond Series by Ian Fleming: The quintessential spy with a license to kill—he is charming, dangerous and has impeccable style. This series of 14 original novels written in the 1950s and 60s have inspired movies and sequels by multiple authors. Not much needs to be said about James Bond; he is an agent in the British Secret Service, a complicated man, the books tell the stories of his dangerous and essential missions across the world.
  2. The Perfect Kill: 21 Laws for Assassins by Robert Baer: A non-fiction book on assassins and assassinations written by a man who had a long and accomplished career with the CIA, this book delves into the history of political assassinations, giving different perspectives from political and historical viewpoints to his own first-hand experiences.
  3. Bourne Series by Robert Ludlum: The original trilogy (The Bourne Identity; The Bourne Supremacy; and The Bourne Ultimatum) tells the gripping tale of a man named Jason Bourne suffering from amnesia who finds himself embroiled in the dangerous world of spies and assassins. This series turned out to be so popular that it was adapted into movies and several sequels were written by another author.
  4. The Gray Man by Mark Greany: This thrilling fictional book is based around a character called Court Gentry who makes his living as a particularly competent professional assassin after getting in trouble with his CIA bosses. The story evolves when a bounty is put on his head and other assassins start hunting him down.
  5. The Day of the Jackal by Frederick Forsyth: Set in the 1960s, this book is about a professional assassin who is contacted by a group of dissidents to kill the French President. The assassin is given the codename “The Jackal” and the book tells a thrilling and detailed tale of the preparations of an assassination.
  6. Mitch Rapp series by Vince Flynn: Mitch Rapp, a man whose life has been marred by personal tragedy caused by terrorism, is now a CIA operative. Highly trained, over the course of 14 novels, we get to follow him as he undertakes difficult and dangerous missions for his country.
  7. Elemental Assassin by Jennifer Estep: A series of fantasy novels set in world with vampires, giants and dwarves, this book’s central character is a woman called Gin Blanco. She is a skilled assassin often codenamed Spider who leads a double life and follows her own moral code.
  8. Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Mass: This young adult fantasy series is set in a kingdom that is corrupt and is ruled by a tyrant. The novels follow the adventures and relationships of a teenage assassin, Celaena, who grew up as an orphan but was trained as an assassin from an early age.
  9. Hitman: Enemy Within by William C. Dietz: A science fiction novel, it tells the story of an agent named simply Agent 47 who has been bred to kill and how he tracks down and kills enemies of The Agency.
  10. Assassin: The Terrifying True Story of An International Hitman by Christopher Robbins: Due to the shadowy world in which they operate, they are relatively few in-depth non-fiction books about assassins. This makes this book a rarity. It tells the terrifying story Carlos Evertsz, a Dominican Intelligence Officer who works in the capacity of an assassin and commits ruthless acts of violence.
